When you get the opportunity to chat with someone whose competing for a spot in the 2020 olympics. You take it. On top of being a professional sprinter, Maya runs her own health and wellness blog called oh so maika where she takes everything she’s learned thus far in the wellness world and her running career and merges it into one platform where she can inspire and motivate young readers to be the best version of themselves. I was immediately drawn to Maya’s brand for 2 reasons. Number one being she has an insane body and is stunning like hello I immediately wanted to know what she eats lol and two, her emphasis on staying true to the authentic you. You can’t just magically switch lives with someone – you have to work hard as hell to create the life, body and relationships you want and absolutely nobody is going to do it for you. In the age of social media where you’re constantly seeing everyone’s highlight reel, we have become entitled as fuck. So it’s refreshing to find someone who tells you upfront that the journey is going to be hard. I mean let’s not forget she’s training for the olympics so this girl knows what hard work and dedication means. It’s not every day you get to hear from someone who has put so much time, effort, sweat, tears – you name it – into a sport to make it as far as Maya. They always say, surround yourself with people who make you want to be better and I think you’re going to feel that way after meeting her.
What inspired @ohsomaika // ohsomaika.com ?
I started my blog ohsomaika when I decided to pursue running professionally. It was a way for me to share everything I had access to, and learned about health and wellness in an easy and relatable way.
When did you realize that being in the health and wellness space was something you wanted to make a career out of?
I realized I wanted to make it more than just a blog once I saw how the health and Wellness space was evolving. It became really confusing and overwhelming because of all the info that was coming out. I wanted to create something that could guide and educate the people that follow me through all the bullshit trends and fad diets we have been exposed to. That’s why I created my 3 week program OSM reset! You can find it on my website.
If the person reading this feels like they want to get into the health and wellness space, but has no clue where to begin, where would you tell them to start?
My advice is always to go back to the basics. Before you jump into a diet or spend 100$ on adaptogens and supplements. Do some research first. Don’t just trust what someone preaches about on Instagram.
Simplify your diet and your supplement intake so you can monitor how your body is actually feeling and then slowly start incorporating things you researched and fully understand. The end goal should be being in tune with your body.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
There’s so many things I could say!! That’s a hard one But I think the most important is to really connect with the essence of yourself. Pay attention to the things and people you’re drawn to. What really makes you happy and lights you up?? We often work hard to make other people like us and are constantly grinding to make our dreams and goals come true which is great but if we don’t really know take the time to get to know who we are when nobody else is around then we will never be happy or truly successful. If you don’t enjoy your own company how do you expect others to?
How do you continue to challenge yourself in regards to personal growth?
I read and write A LOT whenever I have free time so that I stay away from social media as much as possible. I know that sounds silly considering I have a blog but it’s hard to be in touch with what you need in order to grow if you’re constantly putting in energy focused on other people’s life and staring at your phone. I Pay attention to the accounts and things I’m drawn to so I can take whatever I need and use it as inspiration in my own life so I can continue to grow and create.
What were the fears you had to face to get you and your brand to where it is now? How did you overcome them?
I’ve evolved a lot over the years and I think the biggest fear for me was getting over this idea that I had to be attached to one theme or subject to stay trendy and likeable. The part I love most about my blog ohsomaika is that I share my experiences, knowledge and thoughts on things that people don’t normally like to talk about. Because really at the end of the day health isn’t just about what you eat it’s also about how you live your life and treat yourself. So just making sure I always stay true to being open and candid about my journey on whatever subject so that other women can have someone to relate and look up to. Not just get information from.
Knowing what you know now. What’s one piece of advice you would give your younger post-grad self?
Don’t let what other people think or say affect your actions. Do whatever feels right in the moment regardless of what you think is expected of you.
When the motivation starts wearing off. What keeps you disciplined and focused?
I always come back to why I started. I remember the feeling you get when you begin something new and remember to trust the process.
Do you have a morning routine? If you do. Spill the deets.
I wake up, no phone for 15 mins. I oil pull with coconut oil and Go downstairs to drink lemon water and macro greens (from macro life nutrients) and then do some stretching and core work. I finish the morning with a double espresso and some reading or journaling in my front porch!! Get that morning light in your eyes!!!
Must – have beauty product?
Right now I’m OBSESSED with augustinus bader moisturizer and also Sunday Riley good genes is a must have. Can’t live without those 2 products!
