I hope you’re all having a fantastic Sunday. Whether you’re laying in bed hung af or just getting back from the farmers market with your organic reishi mushrom tea I promise that you’ll want to keep reading.
Let’s flashback to the good ol’ college days. For me personally I had no clue what I wanted to do, the degree I was getting was honestly the last thing I would think about (sorry mom). Finding balance after university is freaking hard, but finding balance IN university is even harder. There is so much going on…..you want to experience those “college years” but also want to find your true love? You want to stay healthy and fit so you can go out and look hot while you drink every weekend just to start over on Monday morning. Also, you can’t fail anything because that’s not a cute look. What about grad school? Did you volunteer enough? When do you start applying to jobs? Also do I get a job while being a student? Am I gaining weight from meal hall or is it my late night pizza orders after you somehow ended up high with your roommates watching 21 Jump Street for the 11th time? So many questions.
For all you college gals out there look no further. Take a deep breath and release those shoulders from your ears. Today on the blog I’m bringing on Jazmin Cubilla OR @jazmintylerfitness. Originally from Los Cabos, Mexico (if you haven’t been you HAVE to go so gorg) this sophomore at Berkeley University really caught my eye on insta. She runs a full health and fitness page, creates workout tutorials, follows a nourishing veg packed diet, is obsessed with yoga and strength + functional training all while studying her undergrad in political science. She’s basically what I would have loved to be in university. lol.
I HAD to figure out how she finds balance. University was the time of my life and I wouldn’t trade my experience for the world but the last thing I had was balance/routine. I got to ask Jazmin how she found her passion and just went for it all while being a full time student. Which is a lot harder than you’d think.
…
Hi everyone! My name is Jazmin Cubilla and I’m from Los Cabos, Mexico! I am currently a sophomore at UC Berkeley, so that makes it almost two years now that I’ve been living in the Bay Area. While my major is Political Science, I always say that my true passion is health and fitness — I’m obsessed with yoga and strength + functional training, trying delicious new recipes, and leading a balanced and holistic lifestyle!
I started my Instagram account almost two months ago to document my passion for health and fitness and it has been an absolutely amazing journey! Connecting with like-minded people has been so motivating, and sharing my love for wellness has been nothing short of inspiring — knowing that I can help motivate people to start their own fitness journeys is a dream come true!
How did you realize health & fitness is what you wanted to pursue?
It honestly felt like a very natural progression for me! Working out and eating healthy has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. Now that I’m in college, I figured what better time than to start actively pursuing my career goals! I still don’t know exactly what this future career might look like, but I figured that starting a “mini blog” on Instagram dedicated to my passion was a great way to start 🙂
Once you realized health & fitness was what you wanted to pursue, what was your first step into making your thoughts become reality?
I honestly just went for it! I’d always been a bit nervous to put myself out there online, but then one night (at like 2am!) I had the thought that I should start documenting my health and fitness routines… the next morning I had my account set up and had posted my first photo! It was definitely a super quick decision, but I’m so glad I took the leap and didn’t overthink it.
What were the fears you had to overcome to get you where you are right now?
Definitely what other people might think — while social media can be a super uplifting and motivating space, it can also be filled with people who don’t have the best intentions. However, I have dealt with little to no negativity thus far — my experience has been nothing but positive, which really blows my fears out of the water! Some people might judge, but what others think of you is none of your business! Just do YOU and fully pursue your goals.
What’s your #1 tip on keeping up a fitness regime with a busy schedule/how do you make sure you always make time?
It’s all about being consistent and developing discipline! I’m in bed most nights by 9pm, and try to be asleep by 10. I need lots of sleep, so getting to bed early makes it more likely that I’ll wake up early the next day! If I had to give one tip to truly keep up a fitness routine during busy days, it would be to wake up at the same time each day and head straight to the gym! Getting workouts out of the way first thing makes it so much easier to stick to your goals.
Another tip is to meal prep! I do all my food shopping and meal prepping on the same day to save time… this ensures that I’ll always have quick access to super nutritious food!
What steps do you take to make sure you’re consistent + disciplined?
I always try to keep my goals in mind. Whether I am trying to lean out or build muscle, I constantly ask myself whether the actions I am doing each day are bringing me closer or further away from my goals. If an action is distancing me from my goals, then I won’t do it! Simple as that!
How tf do you balance your social life, family, friends, fitness, and have a life?
It can definitely be super difficult! I’d like to think that having a fit life involves a triangle of things: a full night’s sleep, an active social life, and time for schoolwork and/or your job. However, you can only choose two of those three things hahaha.
All jokes aside, what makes it easy for me to balance it all is the fact that on most nights, I’ll prefer to stay in and relax over going out! I’m my happiest when I’m with my family and enjoying a night in, so that frees up a lot of time that would otherwise be spent socializing at night. However, if you love going out, don’t let that stop you from achieving your fitness goals! Moderation is key for everything in life, after all.
Of course we know that everyones different when it comes to what they eat but what’s your go to meal you can always count on when you’re looking to keep it healthy?
Definitely a huge macro bowl! This means that I start with a protein (like grilled barramundi, chicken breast, or marinated tofu) and then I’ll add a healthy fat (like hemp seeds, ½ an avocado, some olives, or a few tablespoons of hummus). If I’m trying to lean out I’ll limit my carbohydrates, but right now I’m looking to build strength so I’ll also pile on the complex carbs (roasted kabocha squash, sweet potatoes, and quinoa are my faves!). Then, I’ll add all the raw veggies I’m craving: sunflower sprouts, mixed greens, shredded cabbage, carrots… the more color and crunch in your bowl the better! Finally, I’ll top off all these goodies with a delicious sauce like EVOO and balsamic (I absolutely LIVE for vinegar, weird, I know!) and dig in!
Go to snack?
Raw sugar snap peas dipped in hummus, or some homemade bliss balls (I just throw in ingredients like rolled oats, nut butter, protein powder, and mashed banana and get a cookie-dough like consistency, then keep in the freezer for a quick snack!)
Who do you always stalk on insta for motivation?
My favorite people to follow are @sjanaelise, @sarahsday, @kalejunkie, @tiablanco, @samiclarke, and @whitneysimmons! All these girls are KILLING the wellness game and they’re super inspiring 🙂
