PART I: Fitness
I should start right off and say that I have always been very conscious with what I eat, I’ve been obsessed with health, food and fitness since high school. My entire junior high youtube history consisted of the Victoria Secret Fashion Show (yes, even all the way back to the early 2000’s – #teamnaomi obvi) but it was when I came back from my first year of university my dedication really began. The freshman 15 – oh what an inevitable chapter in our lives. We’ve all been there (or are still there) whether we like it or not, you go from playing multiple sports in high school to drinking 3 nights a week, eating pizza while drunk, eating MacDonald’s while hungover. Although I don’t regret a thing (there’s really nothing like a hot slice smothered in hidden valley ranch while heavily intoxicated) did it ever take its toll, both mentally and physically. I remember coming home after my first year and knowing something had to change, I didn’t have a gym in my small town, so I used trusty ol’ Pinterest, found some kick ass workouts and got my ass into gear.
PART II: Diet
It was after my second year was finished I came home from university, all prepared to start my 4 month cleanse of 0 alcohol when I stumbled across Cowspiracy..for those of you who don’t know, it’s a documentary that explores the impact of animal agriculture on the environment, and investigates the policies of environmental organizations on this issue. The moment I found out that globally, one fifth of all our energy consumption used for industrial agriculture is more than what they use for all of our transportation – cars, trucks, planes, trains, boats – combined, I swore that meat was the enemy sent from Satan himself. Now we come up to my vegan phase, let’s just keep in mind I was basing all of my information and theories off of 1-3 documentaries I watched on Netflix (I swore I knew everything) although at this very moment I still consider myself a pescatarian which is someone who adds fish and seafood to a vegetarian diet, at one point in time I swore off dairy, eggs, ANY animal by products. I mean let’s be real..who hasn’t tried being vegan? I know you all watched “What the Health” on Netflix – an egg is equivalent to smoking 3 cigarettes? Shut the front door.
Overall I found nothing in my body had really changed, sure I was relatively thin but I wasn’t anywhere near my dream body…I was working out 4-5 times a week, eating a mostly plant based diet and yet I was still feeling foggy, bloated and overall even more confused?! WHY DON’T I LOOK LIKE BELLA HADID. Every time I went on the internet it told me to cut something different out of my diet – can I have my low carb, low fat, gluten free, 0 sugar meal please. It was sooooo confusing and mentally draining. after trying just about every fad diet out there I really do believe I’ve found something that responds so well to my body.
First things first I want to repeat my last sentence…”found something that responds so well to MY body. ” Emphasis on MY. Me. Not you. This is key to remember, what works for someone may not work for you, in no way am I a nutritionist/health expert, I just want to share my journey because most likely someone else has been feeling this way too.
PART III: Discovery
Anyway, back to my story, approx. 1 month ago I started researching a Keto based diet..now I know what you’re thinking “OMG all she eats is meat and dairy!” I even heard she puts butter in her coffee…oh the misconception of a keto diet is so real it drives me nuts. I have personally experienced some of the positive effects, I’m snacking much less, my day doesn’t revolve around my next meal like it used to and I swear my mind is so much more clear. Like I said I’m no health expert but, the people I’m about to list are. So instead of me plagarizing the books I’ve read/are currently reading I’m going to tell you where to go and what to read.
So, if you’re like me and have felt like pretty much your whole life you thought you were eating as healthy as you could, exercising consistently, yet seeing no change what so ever, pleaseeeee at least check out one of these books. I promise you will not be dissapointed.
PART IV: Research
- Eat Fat, Get Thin – Dr. Mark Hyman
- FOOD: What the Heck Should I Eat? – Dr. Mark Hyman
- Keto-tarian – Dr. Will Cole (personal fave)
- Fat for Fuel – Dr. Joseph Mercola
These 4 books are what it took for me to take the plunge into this lifestyle change. Don’t forget I am only 1.5 months into this but the results I’m feeling are already so powerful I couldn’t not share this with you guys. Remember, this entire blog is based on my journey to finding my best self, how to look and feel my very best both mentally and physically, so if anyone else has any tips, tricks or suggestiosn PLEASE I’m begging you let me know what they are, I am obsessed with this stuff.
If I can help just 1 person get on the right path thats sure as hell fine by me.
All the best 🙂
